Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are the oldest and most distinctive Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, demonstrating remarkable resilience amidst modernization. The purpose of this study is to discuss the role of pesantren in the history of Indonesian Islamic civilization through an examination of the characteristics of traditional (Salafiyah) and modern (Khalafiyah) pesantren, the transformation of the education system from the classical period to the digital era, and their contribution to Indonesian Islamic soft power diplomacy. Furthermore, the study examines how pesantren maintain traditional values, shape the character and spirituality of their students, and contribute to maintaining national cultural identity amidst globalization. Using a qualitative approach based on literature, this study demonstrates that pesantren are dynamic, adaptive, and influential Islamic educational institutions. The findings confirm that pesantren hold a strategic position in the development of contemporary Indonesian education, culture, and diplomacy. Pesantren are not only centers for the transmission of classical Islamic knowledge but also socio-cultural agents capable of responding to contemporary developments while strengthening the image of moderate Indonesian Islam globally.
