Islamic Boarding Schools as Indonesia's Soft Power Diplomacy: Historical Traces and Global Relevance in South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East

Building on the long history of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as centers of moderate Islamic education, the government is now using them to promote a peaceful and inclusive image of Indonesian Islam. Over the past two decades, Islamic boarding schools have undergone a transformation, becoming increasingly strategic in the context of international relations. The government is utilizing Islamic boarding school-based cultural diplomacy as a soft power instrument to promote moderate Indonesian Islam globally. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of Islamic boarding schools as a crucial component of Indonesia's cultural diplomacy and soft power strategy. The research method employed library research, collecting and analyzing various relevant written sources related to Islamic boarding schools, cultural diplomacy, and Indonesia's soft power strategy. The sources used included scientific journals, academic articles, and research reports published between 2020 and 2025. Data were analyzed qualitatively through reading, recording, and interpreting information to identify patterns, concepts, and relationships between Islamic boarding schools and international diplomacy. The results show that Islamic boarding schools are effective non-state diplomatic actors in building global networks and promoting the values of Islamic moderation. Thus, Islamic boarding schools are strategic assets in supporting Indonesia's position internationally.
