Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, playing a significant historical, social, and cultural role in shaping the identity of Nusantara Islam and possessing the potential to serve as global assets in cultural diplomacy. Since the early days of Islamization, pesantren have developed through a process of acculturation with moderate, tolerant, and adaptive local cultures, enabling them to survive into the modern and global era. This study aims to analyze pesantren as Indonesia's global asset by tracing their historical development and examining their roles and strategies in the contemporary reality of cultural diplomacy. The research method used is library research with a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing secondary data sources in the form of books, national and international journal articles, and relevant scientific literature. The results show that pesantren function not only as religious educational institutions but also as instruments of Indonesian soft power in introducing moderate, peaceful, and inclusive Nusantara Islam at the global level. Pesantren contribute through international educational networks, intellectual exchanges, the use of digital technology, and the central role of Islamic scholars (kyai) in maintaining religious values amidst modernization. In conclusion, Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) hold a strategic position as global assets and agents of Indonesian cultural diplomacy, making a significant contribution to building a positive image of Indonesian Islam internationally without sacrificing its Islamic identity and local traditions.
