Abstract

The background to this study is the tendency of students to begin research with a title, rather than a problem, resulting in weak research gaps, such as simply differences in location or year of research. This article aims to formulate a learning model for Islamic banking research that helps students identify research gaps more systematically through a combination of a problem tree and an article matrix. The research method uses a qualitative design approach based on document review and literature review. The primary data consists of draft learning materials, student worksheets, Islamic banking policy sources, and ten scientific articles related to digital banking, service risk, ESG, financing, and Islamic bank governance. The study results show that the problem tree is conceptually effective in identifying root causes, core issues, and impacts, while the article matrix helps students compare variables, methods, results, and limitations of previous research. This model results in a four-stage learning process: mapping current issues, critical reading of articles, classifying four types of gaps, and formulating an evidence-based research title. This article emphasizes that the ability to identify gaps cannot be developed through memorizing methodological theories, but through structured practice reading, comparing, critiquing, and synthesizing scientific articles.
